What's Changing in 2025?

It’s that time of year that feels a lot like watching Hogwarts students get sorted into their houses. We’re all on the edge of our seats, waiting to see where our favorite Hyatt properties will land.

Will that dreamy beachfront resort stay safely in ‘Hufflepuff' (a.k.a. an affordable category), or will it be sent straight to 'Slytherin' (where it demands waaaaaay more points)? Maybe, just maybe, some hidden gem will get a lucky placement in 'Gryffindor'—brave enough to drop a category and become an even better deal.

Grab your wands— erhm, your points stash— because the 2025 Hyatt Award Chart changes are here, and it’s time to see who’s moving up, who’s moving down, and how to make the most of it!

Effective March 25, 2025, Hyatt is adjusting the categories of 151 properties:

  • 118 properties are moving up a category, meaning they'll require more points for a free night.

  • 33 properties are moving down, so you'll need fewer points to book a stay.

These shifts can impact your travel plans, especially if you've been eyeing specific hotels. 💔😩

However, the good news is that we still have an award chart (unlike Hilton and Marriott who ditched theirs a few years ago) and the Hyatt Award Chart itself is NOT changing.

Plus, no new categories have been added either— the idea of a Category 9 loomed over us like a ‘Let’s circle back’ email on a Friday afternoon. Thankfully, it hasn’t arrived… yet.

Making the Most of These Changes

Don't let these adjustments throw a wrench in your plans. Here's how to stay ahead:

  1. Book Before March 25, 2025: If a property you're interested in is moving up a category, reserve your stay before this date to lock in 🔒 the current (lower) rate.

  2. Explore Properties Moving Down: Take advantage of hotels dropping in category. Your points will stretch further, allowing for longer stays or extra perks.

  3. Stay Flexible: Consider alternative destinations or dates. Sometimes, a neighboring city offers similar experiences at a lower point cost or you may find cheaper off-peak nights by adjusting your stay dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What happens if I book a hotel that's moving down a category after March 25, 2025?

A: If you book before the change and the property moves down, Hyatt will refund the point difference automatically. (Between you and me, after these changes… it’s the least they could do, thank you very much.)

Q: Can I combine points and cash for a booking?

A: Yes, Hyatt offers a “Pay My Way” option, allowing you to use a combination of points and cash for your stay.

Q: How can I earn more Hyatt points quickly?

A: Our favorite way to earn Hyatt points is by transferring our Chase Ultimate Rewards! Consider opening an Ultimate Reward earning card, like the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, or opting for a Hyatt co-branded credit card.

Q: Do these changes affect existing reservations?

A: No, existing reservations made before March 25, 2025, will honor the rate at the time of booking.

Bottom Line

Remember, annual adjustments like these are standard across all loyalty programs. Instead of hoarding points like all the old iPhone boxes you can’t seem to throw away, use them! Points can lose value over time, so it's best to put them to work and enjoy memorable experiences now just be sure to book before March 25th to lock in the current rate!

And as cheesy as this sounds: don’t forget ✨gratitude✨ Yes, these changes are not our favorite and it sucks to watch your favorite hotel continue to go up in points year after year, but the fact that we are even able to do this in the first place is literally amazing! Taking dream vacations at a fractionnn of the cost is something to be grateful for nonetheless.

Okay, okay, sappy moment OVER. 🥹
